Who we are
Synthetic Africa is a media company producing the series Asili Africa and Living in Africa. It is a Nexus Works media venture. This policy explains what personal data we collect through syntheticafrica.com (the “site”), why, and the choices you have. For any privacy question or request, email hello@syntheticafrica.com.
What we collect
Information you give us
- Contact form. When you send us a message we collect your first name, last name, email address and message. We use it only to read and reply to you. Submissions are stored in our website database and sent to our team by email.
- Email. If you email us directly, we receive your email address and whatever you include in the message.
- Comments. If you leave a comment, we collect the name, email address and comment you enter, plus your IP address and browser details to help detect spam.
Information collected automatically
We use the following tools, which use cookies and similar technologies in your browser:
- Google Analytics (loaded through Google Tag Manager) tells us how many people visit, which pages they view, roughly where they are, what device they use, and how they arrived. We use it to understand our audience and improve the site.
- Meta Pixel (from Meta Platforms, which runs Facebook and Instagram) records visits to the site and actions such as clicking through to listen to an episode or sending the contact form. We use it to measure how well our Facebook and Instagram adverts work and to show our adverts to people who have visited the site or who are similar to them. Meta may combine this with information it already holds about you if you use its services.
These tools record things like the pages you visit, the links you click, your IP address, browser and device type, and an identifier stored in a cookie. We do not send your name, email address or message contents to Google or Meta.
Links to other services
The site links to our shows and profiles on services such as Spotify and X. When you follow those links, that service’s own privacy policy applies. We only record that the link was clicked.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers that run the site and the tools described above: our hosting provider, Google (Analytics and Tag Manager) and Meta (Pixel). These providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States.
How long we keep it
We keep contact form messages and emails for as long as we need them to handle your enquiry and any follow-up conversation. Google Analytics keeps data for the retention period set in our account, and Meta keeps data under its own policies.
Your choices
- You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site still works without them.
- You can opt out of Google Analytics with Google’s browser add-on.
- You can control how Meta uses website activity for adverts in your Facebook or Instagram ad preferences.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under Kenya’s Data Protection Act, 2019, you may have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to its use, and to withdraw consent you have given. Email hello@syntheticafrica.com and we will respond. You also have the right to complain to your data protection authority; in Kenya, that is the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
Children
The site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site changes. The date at the top shows when it was last revised.
